Wealthsimple is Canada’s leading financial innovator. The company offers a full suite of simple, sophisticated financial products across managed investing, do-it-yourself trading, cryptocurrency, tax filing, spending and saving. Wealthsimple currently serves more than 4 million Canadians and holds over $125 billion in assets under administration.
At Wealthsimple, we take our clients' security seriously. The Fraud Investigations team is the front line of defense within our Security & Risk group. We are looking for a sharp, detail-obsessed Fraud Investigator to specialize in Banking & Cash Fraud. You will be the backend detective protecting our platform, tracking illicit fiat money movement, and ensuring our cash products (like our Cash account, cheques, EFTs, Interac e-Transfers, and wires) remain secure.
This is a 9-month contract with the possibility of extensions or conversion based on performance and business needs.
Investigate & Trace: Dive into the weeds of suspected deposit fraud, fraudulent EFTs, wire fraud, Interac e-Transfer interceptions, reviewing cheque deposits and money mule networks. You will analyze internal ledgers, funding histories, and transaction data to trace fiat funds and uncover illicit money movement.
Secure & Mitigate: Take immediate, decisive action to lock down high-risk accounts and halt suspicious outgoing transfers. You will work behind the scenes to partner with external financial institutions to recall stolen funds, reverse fraudulent EFTs, and file bank-to-bank indemnities.
Empower the Frontline: You will conduct deep-dive investigations, write clear, conclusive case notes, and provide our client-facing (CX) teams with exactly what they need to communicate to the client: handling the complex financial puzzle so they can handle the relationship. You will also be expected to directly interact with clients to resolve any fraud issues when needed.
Manage the Queue: Act as a master multi-tasker, managing multiple complex banking investigations at once while strictly maintaining case-closure Service Level Agreements (SLAs) .
Connect the Dots: Participate in weekly calibration sessions with your peers to share findings, spot new banking scam typologies (e.g., synthetic identity rings, cheque kiting, first-party/friendly fraud), and help the team build better automated defenses.
The Financial Detective: You have incredibly high attention to detail. You love following the money, analyzing deposit patterns, identifying risky funding behaviors, and solving complex fiat puzzles.
Calm & Decisive: You are resourceful, persistent, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where quick backend decisions are required to freeze assets before they leave the Wealthsimple ecosystem.
A Clear Synthesizer: You don’t just solve the case; you document it flawlessly. You know how to take a messy, complex financial investigation and distill it into a clear, actionable summary for internal teams or external banking partners.
Experience: Minimum 1 year of direct, backend fraud investigations experience, with specific exposure to retail banking fraud, fiat cash movement (EFT/ACH, wires, Interac e-Transfers), or deposit fraud.
Banking Typologies: Hands-on experience investigating money mules, first-party/friendly fraud, cheque fraud, and synthetic identities (with a foundational understanding of how account takeovers can tie into these events).
Industry Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of Canadian clearing systems and rules (e.g., how EFT regulations, Interac guidelines, and bank indemnities dictate fund recovery).
Analytical Chops: The ability to collect, organize, and analyze financial ledgers, transaction metadata, and banking details with precision to spot interconnected fraud rings.
Communication: Exceptional written communication skills for case documentation, drafting clear summaries, and cross-functional handoffs.
Fintech Curiosity: A genuine, active interest in the evolving landscape of digital banking, faster payments, and how traditional fraud intersects with modern fintech.
Certifications: Completed courses or professional designations in fraud examination or financial crime (e.g., Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or CAMS ).
